Specification Guide


 

Part 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes the following:

Furnish all labor, materials, services, equipment and appliances required in conjunction with design, fabrication and installation of the Petrarch Exterior Cladding System as designated on the contract drawing, including, but not limited to:

1. Panels.
2. Moldings.
3. Fasteners.
4. Adhesives

Architect Note: This section variable. Complete as desired.


1.3 RELATED SECTIONS

A. Division 5 Section 05400 for framing.
B. Division 7 Section 07210 for building insulation.
C. Division 7 Section 07915 for sealants.
D. Division 9 Section 09250 for sheathing.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Single-Source Responsibility for Material: Obtain each color, grade, finish, type, and variety of material from a Single Source with resources to provide materials of consistent quality in appearance and physical properties, including the capacity to cut and finish material without delaying the progress of the work. Manufacturer shall have successfully completed at least five projects of the type, scope and quality required within the past five years.

B. Single-Source Responsibility for Other Materials: Obtain each type of accessory, sealant, and other materials from one manufacturer for each product.

C. Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced installer with not less than three years successful experience in completing exterior cladding systems similar in material, design, and extent to that indicated for Project that has resulted in construction with a record of successful in-service performance. Workers shall be skilled in their designated tasks, and under the supervision of trained foremen.

D. Coordination: The Contractor for the work of this section shall coordinate requirements and materials with other trades.


1.5 SUBMITTALS

A. General: Submit the following in accordance with the Conditions of Contract and Division 1 Specification Sections.

B. Submissions must be within 10 working days of General Contract award to avoid project delay. If not adhered to, Architect will designate exact product to be used and contractor will have no recourse.

C. Product data for each type of component required including specifications, installation instructions and general recommendations from manufacturer.

D. Shop Drawings including elevations and sections for all components detailing, fabrication and installation of exterior cladding system. Include cutting and setting drawings indicating sizes, dimensions, sections, and profiles of panels; arrangement and provisions for jointing, supporting, anchoring, and bonding panels; and details showing relationship with, attachment to, and reception of related work. Include large-scale details of each system component, anchorage and fastening device. Where shop drawings deviate from drawing of specification requirements, note such deviations on shop drawings and provide written explanation for deviation.

E. Samples for verification purposes of exterior cladding material in the form of sets for each color, grade, finish, type, and variety of exterior cladding material required and consisting of material not less than 10 inches square. Include 2 or more samples showing the full range of variations in appearance characteristics to be expected in completed work.

1.6 JOB CONDITIONS

A. Coordinate work of the Section with interfacing and adjoining work for proper sequencing of each installation. Insure best possible protection of materials and finishes.

B. Contractor is responsible for coordinating the proper placement of steel stud framing materials immediately behind the PETRARCH Exterior Cladding System.

1.7 SEQUENCING

A. Substitute Products: Alternate proposals for substitute products will not be accepted unless approved as issued in addenda. Substitute products will not be issued in addenda unless request for substitution and sufficient data and samples are furnished to the Architect for review. Samples and data must be received by the Architect 10 calendar days prior to issue data of last addenda allowable under current project schedule as determined by the Architect.

B. Manufacturer’s Production Schedule: Subcontract for the work of this section shall be placed to allow sufficient time for manufacturer’s production and delivery scheduling. Subcontractor shall submit a written confirmation of lead times for manufacturer’s within 10 working days of General Contract Award.

1.8 WARRANTY

A. All work of this Section shall be guaranteed against defective materials and workmanship for the period of 1 year from the date of acceptance of the building by the Owner’s representative in accordance with applicable provisions of the general condition.

B. Provide manufacturer’s standard 10-year warranty for non-load bearing structural integrity for panels for a period of 10 years from the date of purchase.

 

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

2.2 SURFACE AND INTEGRAL FINISH

A. Panels shall be composite sheets combined with natural slate granules/powder and/or calcium carbonate powder, polyester resin, glass fiber, pigments and fire retardant with homogeneous through color. Panels shall have high resistance to erosion and vandalism and shall not delaminate under any condition.

B. Finish: Manufacturer’s standard random riven, smooth or shot blast texture with solid color (Petrarch) or manufacturer’s standard smooth/matt, riven, or shot blast surface with random color (Fasset).

C. Color: As selected by Architect from manufacturer’s standard line of colors or factory approved special color.

Note: The size tolerance for Petrarch and Fasset is +/- 1/16". Because of the nature of the riven textured surface there is an additional manufacturing tolerance of +/- 1/16".

B. Petrarch Claddings recommends that the following failure loads should be used in determining the number of fasteners required and a factor of safety of at least 2 applied:

  1. 5/16" Petrarch No. 10, flat head CSK screw failure load 280 lbs. for face fastening system.
  2. 7/16" Petrarch Expanding insert failure load 200 lbs. for back fastening system.

Note: Typically fasteners are required at not more than 24" centers providing adequate holding to carry the dead weight of the panel and wind loading up to 40 lbs. per square foot.

 

2.5 MOISTURE, BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL RESISTANCE

A. Moisture absorption is 0.2% by weight (24 hours total immersion), permeability 16 x 106ml/m2, apparent porosity 1%.
B. Panels shall be immune to insect and vermin attach and shall inhibit mold growth.
C. Panels shall be resistant to most acid and organic solvents.

 

2.6 TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE

A. Exterior Cladding System shall not be subject to delamination or decay, after 250 cycles of temperature changes between -40�F and +120�F.

 

2.7 ACCESSORIES

A. Sealants

  1. Tremco Dymonic one-part urethane sealant used with xylol wipe and primer. (For weather seal only.)

B. Structural Setting System

  1. Aluminum Bearing Plates
  2. a) .125 wall thickness, alodine treated, or anodized finished, non-recycled aluminum alloy 6063-T6.

  3. Structural Silicone

2.8 MISCELLANEOUS

A. Provide framing system, and other devices as per manufacturer’s recommendations and as otherwise indicated in the construction documents.

 

2.9 FABRICATION

A. Factory Fabrication: Provide panels which are factory fabricated whenever possible as follows.

  1. Cut to special sizes from manufacturer’s standard sizes.
  2. Pre-drilling and/or countersinking fastener holes.
  3. Preparing special shapes and/or cutouts.
  4. Polishing edges.
  5. Beveling or mitering edges.
  6. Prefabricating inside and outside corners.
  7. Preparing 7/16" panels incorporating special inserts and brackets for the back fastening system.
  8. Bonding insulating materials to panels.
  9. Engraving.

B. Shop or site cutting shall be performed on a portable or table saw using a dry cut, diamond tipped blade. The panels should be textured side up and held clamped down to saw bed. Proper provision should be made to ensure the material is cut square. Operators should always wear eye protection and a respiratory mask and it is recommended that the saw is fitted with a dust extractor system. Any dust on panel surface must be removed immediately.

C. When on site drilling or countersinking is required, panels should be drilled using a portable hand-held pistol drill fitted with a masonry bit suitable for drilling at speeds of between 900 and 1200 rpm. A drill guide should be used to insure straight 90� holes. Any dust on panel must be removed immediately.

D. When an edge is to remain exposed, it shall be polished as per manufacturer’s recommendation to remove saw marks and restore main body color of the panel.

2.10 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Coordination

  1. PETRARCH panels will normally be delivered to the site on wood pallets interweaved with embossed straw paper and wrapped in plastic sheets. Extreme care should be taken to avoid rain or standing water.
  2. PETRARCH should never be temporarily stored outside of its original shipping crate unless supported on a wood pallet. If mechanical lifting equipment is used, panels should always be properly protected to avoid scuffing from ropes or chains.
  3. Extreme care should be taken when handling Petrarch on site. If the panels are soiled or scratched, remedial treatment should be administered immediately for best results. Panels should be carried on edge and care taken not to damage the surface or corners.

B. Storage

  1. Store materials at site, flat, under cover, elevated above grade on level blocking and covered to keep material clean and dry. Covering over material is to be ventilated to prevent condensation. Avoid rain or standing water.

C. Weather Conditions

  1. Proceed with installation only when substrate is completely dry.

 

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates, and conditions under which work is performed with Installer present, to determine if they are in satisfactory condition for installation of system. Do not proceed with installation of system until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

B. Measure areas prior to installation to minimize out of square or unbalanced border conditions.

 

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. General: Comply with panel manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations for installation and with governing regulations and industry standards as applicable to project conditions and supporting substrates. Provide adequate provisions for thermal and structural movements.

B. Installation tolerances: Shim and align panel units within installed tolerance of 1/8" in 10’0" on level/plumb slope and location/line as indicated on construction documents. A stud wall shall be limited to a deflection of L/240.

C. Inspect system components for proper operation and fit. Adjust, repair or replace components not conforming to requirements. Repair or replacement shall be as approved by the Architect.

D. Comply with instructions and recommendations as set forth in manufacturer’s technical white paper (insert specified system title), except to the extent more stringent requirements are indicated.

E. Prior to erection of field set structural set system, a job site meeting will be held to assure understanding of and compliance with manufacturers installation procedures. Meeting will be attended by representatives of Architect, General Contractor, installing Subcontractor, structural silicone Manufacturer, and Petrarch Claddings, Inc. (or their approved local representative).

 

3.3 SPARE STOCK

A. (Architect to fill in as desired.)

 

3.4 ADJUSTING AND TESTING

A. Inspection: Inspect system components for proper operation and fit. Adjust, repair or replace components not conforming to requirements.

 

3.5 CLEANING

A. Clean all panels of dirt, adhesive and sealant using detergents or solvents as appropriate and as recommended by the manufacturer.

B. Remove and replace all damaged panels.

C. Protect all work until accepted.

 

3.6 PROTECTION

A. Contractor shall protect all finished work from damage during remainder of construction period and until accepted. Any damage shall be repaired by the installer at the expense of the party damaging the work and in accordance with the contract requirements.

 

3.7 GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY

A. Variation from specification: Any variation from this specification resulting in additional costs to any other contractor or subcontractor on this project shall be the sole financial responsibility of this subcontractor.

B. All Petrarch catalogs, technical manuals and test data shall be included as an integral part of this specification as if they were printed within and as part of this specification.
